24 Mile Tampa Bay Marathon Swim
The Sixteenth Annual 24 Mile Tampa Bay Marathon Swim will be on Saturday, April 20, 2013. Seventeen Solo Swimmers, and 3 Relay Teams will compete for honors while swimming the entire length of Tampa Bay.
Tampa Bay, Florida - This 24 mile ultra-distance marathon swim race starts at the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and ends on the Courtney Campbell Causeway in Tampa, in a race that covers the entire length of Tampa Bay. The event is held each year to celebrate Earth Day and the revitalization of Florida's largest estuary.
Since this event was first staged in 1998, it has drawn competitors from across the United States, Great Britain, Guatemala, Italy, Australia, Japan, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Germany, India, Canada, and the Cayman Islands. The Tampa Bay Marathon Swim has been listed as one of the 30 "World Swimming Majors" with a distance and degree of difficulty similar to The English Channel, The Catalina Channel and The Boston Light Swim. The fastest competitors are expected to arrive at Ben T. Davis Beach on the Courtney Campbell Causeway starting about 3pm and the field will continue finishing until the sun sets at 8:30pm
The Sixteenth Annual Tampa Bay Marathon Swim will be held on Saturday, April 20, 2013. The starting line is the Magnuson Hotel Marina Cove Resort - 6800 Sunshine Skyway Lane; St. Petersburg, Florida 33711. If you choose to lodge there, please reserve your room early and be sure to request the discounted marathon swim room rates. The telephone number for the hotel is 800.227.8045.
At 6:00pm on Friday, April 19th, there will be a rules and competition meeting for swimmers, boaters, kayakers and crew members. Course maps, t-shirts and swimmers' packets will be available at check-in headquarters located inside the host hotel/starting line: Magnuson Hotel Marina Cove Resort. The hotel's marina is also available for overnight boat storage conveniently located 50 yards from the starting line. Captains should call the hotel Dockmaster to reserve a slip in their marina.
Every effort will be made to start the swim at 7:00am on Saturday, April 20th. Check-in time begins at 6:00am. If weather conditions are dangerous(high winds, thunderstorms, poor visibility) the start may be delayed or rescheduled to the next day, or an alternative race course may be substituted to adhere to safety guidelines.
The Finish Line is located at Ben T. Davis Beach on West Courtney Campbell Causeway; Tampa, Florida 33607. The fastest competitors should start arriving just before 4:00pm and the awards celebration will last until 9pm, or when the last competitors reach the finish line.
